Spotlight – Annette Okafor, MSc (by Grace Ike and Love Olowu)

Annette was one of the first to transition through the Zeribe Nwosu Foundation to pursue studies abroad and recently graduated from the University of Bolton, England, with a Distinction in MSc Data Analytics. In this Spotlight, fellow ZNF volunteers Grace Ike and Love Olowu had a chat with Annette to get a sense of her experience.

Congratulations on completing your Master’s degree! We believe it’s been an incredible journey, and we’re excited to hear all about it! Let’s dive right in!

1. Share one of your most exhilarating moments during your Master’s program and how you conquered any challenges along the way. We’d love to learn from your experience!

One of the most exhilarating moments during my Master’s program was when I presented my research findings to my examiners and lecturers. It was a culmination of months of hard work, late nights, constructive thinking and overcoming challenges.

Conquering the challenges involved staying focused and organized throughout the project. I had to collect and process two sets of data because the first dataset did not yield meaningful results after a whole month of trying to make sense of it, but I sought guidance from previous research, my supervisor, and peers. This taught me how to overcome failure as a learning process and progress with courage to achieve my results.

2. Mastering the art of balance is key! How did you juggle academics with extracurriculars or part-time work? Drop some pearls of wisdom for maintaining balance.

Balancing academics with extracurriculars or part-time work was required a lot of discipline and time management. My pearls of wisdom are as follows.

-Self-care: take care of your mental and physical well-being, sufficient sleep is very important but on days when you must deprive yourself of sleep ensure you make adequate plans for the following day.

-Time management: create a schedule that accommodates work and study, maximize study time to ensure you get the best from it and then embark on your part-time work wholeheartedly. In my case, most of my study time was spent in the library as it enabled me to have maximum focus and concentrate on the task at hand. It also gave me the opportunity to meet like minds and discuss.

-Prioritize: set realistic goals, time is of the essence, don’t dwell on what would not yield substantial results.

3. Collaboration makes the academic world go round! How did you rock teamwork and communication with peers and professors? Any secrets to being a great team player?

In the academic world, collaboration is important for success. I had to listen attentively to my professors and go over notes to understand each class. I also paid attention to my peers’ perspectives as we exchanged ideas. Every idea is important as nobody knows it all, and even when you know the answer, the contribution of your peers would give you a whole new insight into how the task could be completed. I also learnt to listen to groups of people and understand tasks from different perspectives.

 4. Picture yourself back in your undergrad days. What advice would you give to your younger self, knowing what you know now about pursuing a Master’s degree in your field?

If I could go back to my undergrad days, I would advise my younger self to start exploring potential Master’s programs early on. I would also emphasize the importance of staying focused and determined because the rewards are worth the effort.

5. We all know the power of networking! How did you grow your professional connections during and after your Master’s program? How did you build and leverage your network effectively? Share your top networking tips!

Growing my professional connections during and after my Master’s program involved attending networking events, and engaging in external competitions initiated by the school. My top networking tips are as follows:

-Offering help and support to others is key as networking is a two-way street. You need to give for you to receive.

-Being genuine and interested in others’ work, experiences, and challenges goes a long way in understanding others as it makes you become a part of the individual’s success story.

-Follow up with people you meet to maintain the connection through calls, visits, and social media such as LinkedIn to connect and expand your network.

6. It’s not all textbooks and research papers. How did you stay zen during those intense study sessions? Share your secret for managing stress and staying positive!

Staying zen during intense study sessions required a combination of strategies.

I always ensured that I took breaks in between activities to relax and rejuvenate myself.

When I felt overwhelmed, I talked to friends, family, and peers. I also took out time to laugh. During my spare time, I watched comedic clips and listened to uplifting musics to stay positive and stress-free.

7. We’re peering into the future! How do you see the world of information and communications technology (ICT) evolving, and what thrilling opportunities await fresh graduates like you?

The world of ICT is ever-evolving, and fresh graduates have exciting opportunities ahead. With the advancement of technology, we can expect innovations in artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and more. The integration of ICT into various industries will create diverse career paths for young scholars, from virtual reality to smart city development and beyond.

8. Your Master’s thesis must have been a masterpiece! What advice would you give to other students embarking on a similar research adventure?

To students embarking on a Master’s thesis, my advice is:

-Start early: embark on the project you desire as you begin your master’s, this would enable you to make adequate plans and also balance your time adequately.

-Stay organized: Keep notes, references, and data well-structured to avoid chaos later.

-Embrace challenges: Accept that research involves uncertainties and be open to learning from setbacks.

-Communication: ensure you communicate with professors and people different from those you are accustomed to as exposure to different perspectives will increase your knowledge and wisdom.

9. Let’s debunk some myths! What’s one misconception about graduate school that you’d like to set straight for others considering this path?

One misconception about graduate school is that it requires working in isolation. Collaboration and networking are crucial aspects of successful postgraduate studies. Engaging with peers and professors opens doors to new ideas, support, and opportunities, enriching the academic journey. Also, your ideas are not enough. Having study groups and study partners would go a long way in achieving success.

10. Lastly, share an inspiring quote that kept you going through tough times—a mantra that will uplift fellow young scholars reading this!

An inspiring quote that kept me going through tough times was: “By strength shall no man prevail.”

Some people give their best, but it might be in the wrong direction. Be willing to balance your efforts with wisdom and direction for maximum results.

We can’t wait to be inspired by your journey and celebrate your accomplishments!
