The Inaugural ZNF Annual Essay Competition
ZNF Essay 2022
Nigeria has one of the most rigorous educational system in the world. However, while Nigerians have been going abroad for studies since the early to middle of last century, the Nigerian educational system remains vague to many academics and researchers abroad. As a result, these academics and researchers often find it hard to appropriately grasp the scope of the training of a typical Nigerian graduate. Consequently, Nigerian graduates, even those with exceptional grades, may not rank high in admissions or scholarship assessments that involve applicants from other countries and where undergraduate training is taken into consideration. It is a problem and a setback!
To address the above problem, it is important to provide some clarity on the nature and rigour of a typical undergraduate training in Nigeria. Accordingly, the Zeribe Nwosu Foundation (ZNF) hereby calls for submission on its Inaugural ZNF Annual Essay Competition titled:
Undergraduate Education in Nigeria — from Admission Requirements to National Youth Service
PRIZE FOR THE WINNING ESSAYS

First position – N40,000 (forty thousand Naira) to be shared by the co-authors
Second (runner-up) position – N20,000 also to be shared by the co-authors
** NOTE: only one of the two authors should submit
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

1. Writers must work in collaboration (2 authors max)
2. One or both authors may be undergraduates or may have finished national youth service by July 15, 2022
3. Authors paid attention to and followed the essay specifications, especially page limit.
4. Only one submission is permitted per applicant/co-author
ESSAY SPECIFICATIONS

1. Essay should be 3 pages at minimum and 4 pages at maximum
2. Essay should be in a single line spacing, Arial font, and 11 point font size
3. Essay should have a title, names of the two authors, an Introduction, Body and Conclusions
ADDITIONAL POINTS TO CONSIDER

The essay should be based on facts and should provide specific details (and citations where applicable). Essay should shed light on specific aspects of the Nigerian undergraduate education, including how to gain admission, subjects offered, IT/practical experience, grade point aggregates and the interpretation, etc. Essay should be written clearly so that an international audience would easily understand.
TIMELINE

Submission deadline/closing date – July 15, 2022
Result announcement – August 1, 2022
EVALUATION/REVIEW
***************************
Each essay will be reviewed by at least two persons who would assign scores (in percent) as follows:
Fulfillment of eligibility criteria and adherence to essay specifications = 10
Grammatical and spelling correctness = 15
Use of solid examples to buttress points = 10
Completeness of essay, including details about CGPA, IT/lab training, etc = 50
Solid convincing conclusions = 15
At the end of the competition, the two finalist essays will be harmonized into one document after extracting key points from both. This harmonized version will be published on our website and possibly on other platforms too.
